Heliopolis “City of the Sun” A Legacy of an Innovator from the 1900s

More than 100 years ago, the Belgian businessman Baron Empain had turned his dream of building a modern “garden-style city” in the desert outside Cairo into a reality.

Heliopolis or as known in Arabic “Misr El Gadida” has soon become the city of luxury and leisure exuding an aura of nostalgia with its turn-of-the-century grandeur, captivating atmosphere and cosmopolitan residents.

The photogenic suburb prides itself on its elegant aesthetic showcased in the Heliopolis-style unique architecture and the magnifique mixture of historic buildings including the Palace Hotel (now the Presidential Palace), the Baron Palace, the Basilique Church, Omar Effendi and Cicurel department stores, to name but a few.

No wonder that Heliopolis, with its diversified social fabric, is the source of pride and joy of its residents who enjoyed strong community ties as well as a host of cherished memories.
